Who are Benjamin Appl and James Baillieu?

Benjamin Appl is a German baritone who performs in recitals, operas and oratorios all around the world. He began his singing career as a young chorister at the Regensburger Domspatzen, then Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and eventually at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. He was mentored by the legendary singer and song recitalist Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He has won multiple awards and released several albums, and is set to collaborate with the Alpha Classics label to produce a number of albums over the next few years.
 
Benjamin will perform with pianist James Baillieu. James is a regular and beloved presence on the VRS stage, and is one of the leading song and chamber music pianists of his generation. He has given solo and chamber recitals all over the world and collaborates with a wide range of singers and instrumentalists. We’ve spent several years working to book Benjamin and James’ VRS performance, and we can’t wait to spend a wonderful afternoon of song with them!

Benjamin and James give a thrilling rendition of Franz Schubert's epic song 'Erlkönig' (The Elf King) at the Gramophone Classical Music Awards in 2016. The song depicts the death of a child who is haunted by a supernatural being.
